Neuroemotional Technique (NET) is a mind body technique that helps find and remove neurological imbalances due to unresolved emotions. This helps improve many physical, physiological function as well as behaviour. Often, what seems like pure physical pain such as headaches, migraines, neck pain or back pain, are either caused by or made worse by emotions. This is where NET is helpful in identifying and resolving them.
How does NET work?
To understand how NET works, it's best to understand first what happens when we are distressed. In these moments, you may notice various feelings in your body: heart rate and breathing becomes faster, your tummy feels odd, increased sweating, your limbs start to feel restless, etc. These are physiological responses to certain thoughts in your mind.
In certain events, this is a helpful response to enable you to react quickly to a potentially dangerous situation based on memory. However, this is also the very same response that we go through when our minds are triggered to recall unresolved emotions from the past, whether consciously or subconsciously even when there is no real presence of danger.
NET helps raises our awareness of these unresolved emotions so that they can complete their full cycle. This means that you no longer need to react to it physiologically. You may then find that previously tricky circumstances or environments, or making decisions become somewhat easier when our body is less reactive to related "stresses". It doesn't necessarily ensure good decision making as that relies on other factors as well, however, it may be easier to make decisions without unresolved emotions in the way.
Please note that NET is not psychology or counselling, nor does it delve into the spiritual realm.
Recent research published in 2017 showed that NET was able to make significant changes in just 4-5 sessions in persons with traumatic stress symptoms of at least 6 months in those diagnosed and treated for long term potentially fatal diseases like cancer. Results had found that there were objective changes in functional brain MRIs as well as heart rate responses as compared to the control group. Monti DA, Tobia A, Stoner M. Changes in cerebellar functional connectivity and autonomic regulation in cancer patients treated with the Neuro Emotional Technique for traumatic stress symptoms.
